[CALS] International Law in Asia Speaker Series, “International Law and Life in Space: Developments”

March 22, 2024 | Programmes

The Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) hosted our International Law in Asia (ILA) Speaker Series via Zoom webinar titled “International Law and Life in Space: Developments” on 21 March 2024. Moderated by Associate Professor Cheah W.L, the panellists for this event were, Professor Michael Bohlander, Assistant Professor Hilding Neilson, and Ms Roser Almenar. The panellists discussed the role of international law in addressing the discovery of, and contact with, intelligent life beyond Earth. They examined the potential legal and non-legal challenges we will face in our encounter with extraterrestrial intelligence, especially given the absence of applicable comprehensive legal and ethical frameworks. The webinar sparked insightful dialogue, enriching participants’ understanding of international law’s role in humankind’s search, discovery, and potential contact with extraterrestrial intelligence.
