[CALS] Law & Religion Speaker Series: “‘The Republic of Hurt Sentiments’: Placing Religion in a Constitutional Design”
On 6 March 2025, the Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) at the National University of Singapore hosted a webinar titled “‘The Republic of Hurt Sentiments’: Placing Religion in a Constitutional Design” as part of its Law & Religion Speaker Series. The event featured Professor Masum Billah (Jagannath University), with Assistant Professor Dian AH Shah (National University of Singapore) moderating.
Professor Billah explored the constitutional challenges of balancing religious values with secular governance, particularly in Asian societies. He emphasized the importance of democratic pluralism and managing cases where religious sentiments are hurt to maintain social harmony. The discussion also focused on Bangladesh’s approach to these issues, highlighting the interplay between historical shifts and contemporary legal practices.
The webinar concluded with a Q&A session, engaging participants on topics like the impact of blasphemy laws and political dynamics on religious freedoms in Bangladesh.
