CATPLI Reciprocal Workshop 2025: “An Introduction to the Basics of Thai Tort Law”
The Centre for Asian Legal Studies at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore (CALS) and Thammasat University Faculty of Law (TU Law) are delighted to announce the successful completion of the second reciprocal workshop titled “An Introduction to the Basics of Thai Tort Law”.
Held over two Saturdays, 11 and 18 January 2025, and as part of the Centre for Asian Legal Studies – Thammasat University Faculty of Law Peer Learning Initiative (CATPLI), the workshop sought to introduce Singaporean law students to the Thai legal system and the basic concepts underpinning delictual (or tortious) liability under the Thai Civil and Commercial Code (CCC), in particular under section 420 of the CCC – the primary provision governing delictual liability. The workshop was well-attended by 44 law students from all three local law schools – the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Singapore Management University, and the Singapore University of Social Sciences.
For the first time ever, the workshop was conducted partly in-person, with two in-person sessions being held from 10am to 4pm at NUS’ Bukit Timah Campus. A networking session also took place as part of the event, and local law students had the opportunity to mingle with their Thai counterparts.
As part of their visit, students from TU Law were shown around significant cultural and legal sites in Singapore including the Supreme Court of Singapore and Chinatown. They were also introduced to local cuisine, such as Char Kuay Teow and Salted Egg Chicken Rice.
CATPLI forms a crucial part of CALS’ mission to promote the exchange of knowledge between law students from civil law jurisdictions and Singaporean law students who are common-law trained. As noted by CALS’ Director, Associate Professor Jaclyn Neo, CATPLI enables law students to explore new intellectual curiosities as part of their legal education. She further emphasised that CATPLI allows CALS to bring the conversation on Asian law and legal system back to where it belongs – Asia. In a similar vein, Assistant Professor Amnart Tangkiriphimarn, Vice Dean of TU Law, encouraged his students to learn as much as they can from the process despite the challenges they faced.
Since its launch in 2022, CATPLI has organised three workshops introducing Singapore contract and company laws to Thai law students, and one reciprocal workshop introducing Thai contract law to Singapore law students. A further workshop, titled “An Introduction to the Basics of Singapore Tort Law”, is slated to take place in March and April, where a team of Singapore law students will be visiting TU Law to introduce Thai law students the fundamental principles of tort law in Singapore.
