On 2nd and 3rd December, CALS and the University of Tokyo’s Centre for Transnational Law jointly held a Symposium on ‘Constitutionalism and Legitimacy in Asia and the Pacific.’ The event brought together more than twenty scholars of comparative constitutional law from the Asia-Pacific, Europe and the United States to Tokyo to reflect upon the important work of Professor Bruce Ackerman (Yale University). Discussions encompassed empirically-grounded insights from across the region – including Australia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand – as well as theoretical and methodological reflections on Ackerman’s 2019 book Revolutionary Constitutions: Charismatic Leadership and the Rule of Law, with open- and closing-remarks offered by Prof. Ackerman himself.
