On 19 January 2024, the Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) hosted a live podcast recording with Dr Dian AH Shah and Dr Mario Gomez, featuring Tun Richard Malanjum, former Ninth Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Malaysia, current Ombudsperson to the United Nations Security Council, and our Jones Day CALS Visiting Professor on the Rule of Law in Asia. This informal conversation provided a unique opportunity to delve into Tun Malanjum’s career, offering reflections on his time on the bench and as a key figure in Malaysia’s legal landscape. Tun Malanjum shared valuable insights into the practicalities of judging and explored crucial constitutional issues that have significantly influenced Malaysia’s legal, political, and social trajectory. The event also marked the launch of the CALS Chai Chats podcast series, bringing together legal enthusiasts to engage in lively and rigorous conversations about law in action and legal developments in Asia. The session featured a warm welcome address by Associate Professor Jaclyn Neo, Director of CALS, creating a vibrant platform for meaningful dialogue and reflection.
