The Basic Structure Doctrine in Malaysia: Themes & Perspectives

Prof Kevin Y L Tan celebrated the successful launch of The Basic Structure Doctrine in Malaysia: Themes & Perspectives on Monday, 11 August 2025, in Kuala Lumpur. Around 80 guests gathered at the historic Loke Yew Mansion, generously hosted by the law firm Cheang & Ariff, thanks to the kind efforts of Tan Sri Ariff Yusof, former Speaker of Parliament and retired Court of Appeal Judge, and Dato Low Siew Cheang.

The event was attended by many of the book’s contributors, including Shad Saleem Faruqi, Andrew Harding, Wilson Tay, Benjamin Joshu Ong, Emily Ho, Mohd Nazim Ganti Shaari, Wong Chin-Huat, and co-editor HP Lee. Distinguished guests included Federal Court Judge Tan Sri Nallini Pathmanathan and retired Federal Court Judge Dato Mary Lim.

Kevin expressed deep gratitude to Prof Philip TN Koh for his instrumental support, as well as to Prof Jaclyn Neo from the Centre for Asian Legal Studies, NUS, who travelled specially from Singapore to deliver the opening remarks. He also thanked Prof Jason Chuah, Dean of the Faculty of Law at Universiti Malaya, for his kind words, and panellists Andrew Harding and Wilson Tay for their spirited discussion.
