Associate Professor Rebecca Ananian-Welsh is a constitutional law scholar and Editor of the University of Queensland Law Journal at the TC Beirne School of Law. Her present research asks ‘what is a court?’ and explores the essential constitutional character of courts in common law settings.

Associate Professor Rebecca Ananian-Welsh is a constitutional law scholar and Editor of the University of Queensland Law Journal at the TC Beirne School of Law. Her present research asks ‘what is a court?’ and explores the essential constitutional character of courts in common law settings.
In addition to courts and the judiciary, Rebecca’s public law expertise extends to national security and press freedom, and has been recognised in an Academy of Social Sciences in Australia’s Paul Bourke Award for Early Career Research and a number of School and Faculty awards. Her work has also been shortlisted for a Queensland Literary Award (2017) and the 2020 Australian Legal Research Awards Article of the Year.
Prior to joining the University of Queensland, Rebecca held positions with the Laureate Fellowship Project ‘Anti-Terror Laws and the Democratic Challenge’ at UNSW Law Sydney, with global law firm DLA Piper, and with the Australian Government Attorney-General’s Department. She remains strongly engaged with government and the profession, including as a member of the Executive Council of the Australian Association of Constitutional Law and the Australian Judicial Officers’ Association Standing Committee on Judicial Independence, as well as providing ongoing academic input to the work of the Independent National Security Legislation Monitor.
