VISITING SCHOLARS PROGRAMME
Overview
The Visiting Scholars Programme offers accomplished academics and practitioners to undertake research related to Asian legal studies while in residence at CALS. The duration of the programme is usually between one to three months, subject to institutional priorities and capacity. Shorter or longer visits will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Interested applicants who do not hold a doctoral degree or who are completing their doctoral studies should apply to the Faculty of Law’s Visiting Researchers Programme.
Visitors are expected to present their research in a seminar and actively participate in the intellectual life of the Centre, such as attending workshops and public lectures, as well as events related to their research. They are expected to acknowledge CALS in all publications arising from research that benefited from the visit.
During their stay, visitors will be assigned a workspace and provided with full access to NUS library resources and research facilities. Please note however that Visiting Scholars do not have faculty status.
Application Procedure
Prospective visitors are invited to apply in two application cycles:
- Between 1 to 31 August 2025, for applicants wishing to commence their visit beginning January – May 2026.
- Between 1 to 31 December 2025, for applicants wishing to commence their visit beginning June – December 2026.
- We aim to notify applicants on the outcome within a month of the application deadline.
To apply to the Visiting Scholars Programme, the following materials should be submitted to cals@nus.edu.sg with the subject heading “Visiting Scholars Programme”:
- A one-page cover letter indicating information such as the proposed visit period and duration, a description of the research project to be pursued at CALS, and the relevance of the proposed research work to CALS vision and research clusters.
- A CV with publication record.
Funding and Visa
Visitors are typically self-funded or possess financial support from their home institutions or other organizations, but CALS may provide partial funding in exceptional cases.
Visiting Scholars are responsible for ensuring that they have the correct travel documentation, including visas for their entry and stay in Singapore. CALS will not be able to make applications for visas on behalf of visiting scholars but will provide necessary documents to support such applications.
