India continues to be an attractive destination for foreign investment. Its policy makers have taken recent steps to facilitate investment, including by way of an overhaul of the companies’ legislation and extensive liberalization of the foreign investment regime. This seminar will provide insights into India’s legal and regulatory framework, including the recent developments, which will enable investors to navigate the regime.

About The Speaker

Cyril Shroff is a Managing Partner of Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co (“Amarchand Mangaldas”), India’s largest and foremost law firm with approximately 550 lawyers. With over 25 years of experience in a range of areas including corporate laws, securities markets, banking, infrastructure and others, Mr. Shroff is regarded and has been consistently rated as India’s top corporate, banking and project finance lawyer by several international surveys including those conducted by International Financial Law Review (IFLR), euromoney, Chambers global, Asia Legal 500, Asia Law and others.

About The Panelists

Leena Pinsler, who is a Consultant at the Corporate & Finance Department of Drew & Napier, has long and in-depth experience in legal matters relating to the South Asian region, primarily India. While she has spent the past 30 years practising in the areas of corporate and financial services, corporate real estate, international business transactions and tax, she is best recognised as a pioneer for developing an India-focused practice in Singapore. For the past nine years, she has been an adjunct Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS) where she co-teaches Indian Business Law.

Sameer Nath is Managing Director and Head of Mergers & Acquisitions for Citi in India. In this role, Sameer provides M&A leadership for the Corporate & Investment Banking franchise in India and is involved in the origination and execution of all types of advisory transactions including mergers, acquisitions, sales, divestitures, tender offers, restructurings and leveraged buyouts. Citi has been a consistent leader in the Indian M&A market and Sameer has spearheaded many landmark transactions. He has worked at Citi for 13 years. Sameer has an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from Middlebury College

Ashish Patil is Chief Financial Officer & Chief Operating Officer Nalanda Capital. Prior to joining Nalanda, Ashish was with Merrill Lynch as Vice President – Investment Banking/Merger & Acquisition. Ashish has in total 18 years of experience in the field of Investments, Fund management, Investment banking, Fund accounting and operations, Securities laws counselling and compliance, Fund raising and Investor relations. Nalanda Capital manages assets of US$1 billion from prestigious US Endowments, family offices and foundations.

Umakanth Varottil is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore (NUS). He specializes in corporate law and governance, mergers and acquisitions and cross-border investments. While his work is generally comparative in nature, his particular focus is on India. He has co-authored a book, published articles in international journals and founded the Indian Corporate Law Blog. Prior to his foray into academia, Umakanth was a partner at Amarchand Mangaldas, a leading Indian law firm.
