Open Banking in Singapore and UK: Open possibilities for enhancing financial inclusion
This research is funded by the National University of Singapore (NUS) Centre for Banking & Finance Law (CBFL).14 September 2019
Open banking is a divisive topic. Many commentators have argued that it has the potential to provide cost effective and efficient financial services to a wide range of people. Others claim that it will do the opposite, exacerbating pre-existing vulnerabilities and increasing financial exclusion. Further research is clearly needed. This study starts to fill the academic void by exploring the competing narratives to determine how Singapore can best harness the use of financial technology for the benefit of the wider Singaporean community. In exploring these research questions, this study conducts a cross-jurisdictional survey to consider the regulatory approach towards open banking and the impact of open banking on financial inclusion in other jurisdictions, such as the UK.
