Synopsis

If you are interested in hearing about the secret lives of 3 very experienced banking lawyers, come join us for this lunchtime careers talk by our guest speakers, all of whom are NUS Law alumni. They will:

  • share about a day in their respective lives as a banking lawyer practising Singapore/English law, an offshore banking lawyer practising Cayman/BVI law, and an in-house lawyer in a bank;
  • debate the relative advantages of a career in private practice vs in-house vs an offshore firm; and
  • consider the role of junior lawyers in their teams.

About the Speakers

Calvin Tan
Partner, Simmons & Simmons JWS Pte. Ltd.

Calvin has been advising on international cross border structured lending transactions for over 10 years, and he acts mainly for international banks and commodity trading companies. His areas of expertise within banking & finance include commodity finance, funds finance, margin lending, project finance, asset finance, acquisition finance, banking regulations and restructuring.

Shirleen Tan
Partner, Walkers

Shirleen is a partner in the Finance and Corporate Group of Walkers’ Singapore office. Shirleen advises in relation to leveraged and acquisition finance, fund finance, real estate finance, asset finance, structured finance, project finance and general corporate lending. Shirleen completed her training with Allen & Gledhill in Singapore and joined its Banking and Finance Department on qualification in 2006 where she practiced as a banking lawyer. In 2010, Shirleen joined the Banking and Finance Department of Clifford Chance’s Hong Kong office where her principal practice areas were general banking, asset and acquisition finance.

Wong Cui Lian
Legal Counsel, HSBC Singapore

Cui Lian is currently in-house legal counsel at HSBC Singapore. Cui Lian graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2009. After graduation, she did her training at Dentons Rodyk, and later on joined their finance practice group, with focus on banking and finance transactions. In2018, Cui Lian joined HSBC as senior legal counsel, where she advises on general credit and lending matters for corporates.

  • In-person slots are limited to the first 40 students and on a first come, first served basis.
  • Bite-sized treats box will be provided to the first 40 students who registered and turn up for the in-person event. Due to Safe Management Measures, there is strictly no consumption of food allowed in the Seminar Room. Students may collect their treats box after the event has ended.
