Opportunities in IP law exist in law firms and corporations, in the public sector, and in academia. In this session, we are fortunate to have our own Professor David Tan, along with 3 of our alumni, Tony Yeo, Terri Koh and Diyanah Baharudin, come together to offer you insights on the different careers in IP they have chosen, and to share their perspectives on what you can do to prepare yourself if you aspire to a career within this vibrant and fast growing industry.

Tony Yeo

Tony Yeo is the Managing Director of Drew & Napier’s Intellectual Property (IP) practice, and a Director in its Dispute Resolution department. He also heads the firm’s Healthcare & Life Sciences practice. Tony’s expertise lies in litigation, in particular, IP litigation and enforcement comprising patent, trade mark and copyright. He was one of the select few IP practitioners appointed by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) as an IP Adjudicator to adjucate disputes at IPOS for a two-year term from April 2019. Tony is also the President of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property(AIPPI) – Singapore Group.

Terri Koh
Deputy Director, Registry of Trade Marks
Senior Legal Counsel, Intellectual PropertyOffice of Singapore (IPOS)

Terri is a Deputy Director with the Registry of Trade Marks and Senior Legal Counsel with the Legal Department at the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS). Called to the Singapore Bar in 2009, she is an IP law specialist, having spent her entire career in this field. In IPOS, her portfolio requires her to manage trade mark examination, advise internal clients and public agencies on trade mark and geographical indications law and policy, and is responsible for any legislative reform in this area.

Diyanah Baharudin
Counsel, Global Content Protection and IP Policy, Netflix

Diyanah is legally trained by profession and is a member of the Singapore Bar. She is currently part of the global content protection team at Netflix where she is responsible for identifying and advising the business on issues relating to copyright infringement of Netflix content online. She also advises Netflix on the impact of upcoming copyright and platform regulations globally with a focus on the APAC region.

Prior to Netflix she worked with the Singapore government where she took on various roles: as an administrative judge for trademarks, an in-house legal advisor for the Singapore IP Office, as well as a trade negotiator for IP issues. She led the Singapore delegation that saw the conclusion of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement and was Singapore’s delegate to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) on copyright matters.

Diyanah also spent her formative years of work at one of Singapore’s oldest law firms, doing both civil and criminal litigation work, as well as advisory work for both local and international clients. She is also a co-author of a book chapter in International Intellectual Property and the ASEAN Way: Pathways to Interoperability, published by Cambridge University Press.

About the Moderator

Professor David Tan
Co-Director, Centre for Technology, Robotics,Artificial Intelligence and the Law, NUS Law

Professor David Tan holds a PhD from Melbourne Law School (2010), a LLM from Harvard (1999), and graduated with a LLB (First Class Honours)/BCom from the University of Melbourne (1995). David was formerly with the Singapore Administrative Service, serving as Director of Sports at Ministry of Community Development, Youth & Sports (MCYS) and Director of International Talent at Ministry of Manpower (MOM). He has also had work experience at McKinsey & Company and DBS Bank, and at Australian law firms now known as Allens, King & Wood Mallesons and Herbert Smith Freehills.

At NUS Law, David pioneered courses in Fashion Law, Entertainment Law, Freedom of Speech and Privacy & Data Protection Law. His areas of research cover personality rights, copyright, trademarks, freedom of expression, constitutional law and tort law, and his articles have been cited on a number of occasions by the Supreme Court of Singapore.

David has published over 100 articles, comments, book chapters and reviewessays since joining NUS Law in 2008.

David is also an accomplished fine art and fashion photographer having published a coffee table book
Visions of Beauty in association with Versace, and Tainted Perfection in collaboration with Cartier in Singapore. His works have appeared in Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Time and The New Yorker. In 2005, he produced and co-wrote the sports anthem Live Our Dreams for the SEA Games performed by Kit Chan.
