Description of the stipend
The NUS Law Overseas Internship Stipend (OIS) will provide for 5 to 6 students (undergrads and grads) per academic year to undertake competitive unpaid overseas internships, with priority given to financially disadvantaged students. The stipend is intended to help partially defray the expenses for the overseas internship and does not apply to internships conducted remotely.

Internships/Fellowships that qualify for this stipend:

» International Court of Justice (ICJ)
» Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA)
» World Bank Group: ICSID
» United Nations
» Other overseas internships may be proposed and approved by the Faculty on a case-by-case basis. Generally, internships of a public interest nature with an international focus will be given preference.

Eligibility Criteria:
» Be a full-time matriculated student at the time of application.

Application for the Stipend:
Students who wish to apply for OIS will have to fill up the attached application form and email the same, along with relevant supporting documents, to the administrators. Successful applicants will receive a lump sum stipend payment one month before the commencement of the internship.

Stipend Amount:

Category A

(i)     Internships/Fellowships with the ICJ*, PCA*, World Bank and UN.

(ii)    Other approved internships with non-commercial organisations of similar distinction as the institutions named in (i), and  lasting at least  3 months

Amount
Asia – Up to a maximum of S$5,000
Australia, US, Europe and everywhere else – Up to a maximum of S$10,000

*Students awarded for the ICJ Judicial Fellowship Programme or the PCA Fellowship Programme will also qualify for additional funding (S$20,000) under the International Dispute Settlement Fellowship Grant. Click here for more information.

For ICJ/PCA/World Bank/UN internships lasting longer than 3 months in:
Asia – an additional stipend of S$1,000/month for every subsequent month from the fourth month onwards, subject to a maximum of S$5,000/-
Australia, US, Europe and everywhere else – an additional stipend of S$2,500/month for every subsequent month from the fourth month onwards, subject to a maximum of S$10,000/-

Category B
All other approved internships.

Amount
Up to 50% of estimated expenditure, subject to a maximum of S$5,000

The OIS is awarded based on the internship lasting for a minimum period of 3 months . The amount awarded, based on the estimated expenditure for the internship, will be prorated for any internship lasting less than 3 months.

In the event that we have more applicants than no. of stipends available, priority will be given to those with financial needs (i.e. lower per capita household income).

Termination:
NUS Law reserves the right to revoke or terminate the Stipend, if and when NUS Law deems fit. Non-exhaustive examples of reasons for revocation or termination include:

  1. the Stipend recipient applicant fails to comply with any of the terms and conditions mentioned herein.
  2. the Stipend recipient prematurely terminates his/her participation in the internship.
  3. the Stipend recipient’s past or present conduct comes under scrutiny.

In the event that the Stipend is revoked or terminated for any reason, the Stipend recipient must return the unused portion of the financial assistance to NUS Law. NUS Law reserves the right to demand full and immediate refund by the Stipend recipient of all monies disbursed under the Stipend.
