CML CMI 2000th CASE Celebration

November 4, 2022 | Programmes, Research

The Centre for Maritime Law (CML) is pleased to celebrate the publication of its 2,000th case summary in the CML CMI Database of Judicial Decisions on International Conventions on 4 November 2023.  The Database builds on the foundation laid by the late Francesco Berlingieri in an earlier database, and aims  aims to make case decisions more accessible to the worldwide maritime community, in the hope that this will foster comparative research and uniformity of interpretation of international maritime law. The Database has seen more than 10,000 users from various countries around the world, with Singapore consistently being one of the top 10 countries with the most number of users.

The event started with a short welcome by Professor Stephen Girvin, Centre Director of CML and MPA Professor of Maritime Law , followed by an opening speech vai Zoom (from Miami) by  Mr Lawrence Teh, Administrator of CMI.  Associate Professor Paul Myburgh, General Editor of the Database then gave an overview and spoke on some of the notable cases in the Database. This was followed by presentations by fellow contributors, CML Research Associate Elson Ong, and (via Zoom from Aberdeen), Adjunct Senior Research Fellow Luci Carey, and CML Adjunct External Fellow Taco van der Valk (from Rotterdam). Both Elson and Luci spoke of their experience working on the Database since its inception, and Taco spoke about the civil law cases in the Database.

Finally, we were honoured to have a toast, and ceremonial cake-cutting presided over by Tan Beng Tee, Executive Director of the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), and a former (and much-valued) member of CML’s Advisory Board.
