CML Seminar Series: IMO World Maritime Day 2016, “Shipping: Indispensable to the World”
Speaker: Mr Martin Marini, General Counsel, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore
Convenor: Professor Stephen Girvin

In commemoration of IMO World Maritime Day 2016, CML invited guest speaker, Mr Martin Marini, General Counsel for Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to give an evening seminar to our students as well as legal professionals on how Singapore supports Maritime Global and her work at IMO as well as the current maritime trends that the community should take note of.

Mr Marini commenced his talk with a loud blast of the ship’s horn to the delight of the participants! He explained the role that MPA plays domestically, regionally and globally, highlighting the importance of the shipping industry to Singapore’s economy; drawing participants’ attention to the facts that Singapore is the world’s busiest transshipping port and the world’s number 1 bunkering hub. Mr Marini discussed some of Singapore’s successful regional maritime initiatives, including combatting piracy in the Malacca Straits, before turning to explain the work of the MPA at the IMO and how Singapore implements IMO conventions.

The seminar concluded with Mr Marini’s thoughts about the future challenges and opportunities for the maritime industry (with examples such as the opening of the Northern Sea Route in the Arctic, the ‘Blue Economy’ and the positioning of Singapore as the preferred choice as the seat of arbitration) and cyber security risks.
