MPA Professorship Inaugural Lecture: The Safe Port in Maritime Law – Decade of Certainty or Muddier Waters?
Speaker: MPA Professor of Maritime Law, Dr Stephen D Girvin

The MPA Professorship Inaugural Lecture was held on 22nd April 2016 at PARKROYAL on the Pickering in conjunction with Singapore Maritime Week (SMW). The lecture was delivered by Professor Stephen Girvin, MPA Professor of Maritime Law and Director of CML.

Professor Simon Chesterman, Dean of NUS Law gave the opening address to the 100-odd participants comprising of industry persons, fellow academics as well as maritime lawyers (many whom were former students of Professor Girvin). During the lecture, Professor Girvin gave insight into the developing history and former authorities of the law of safe port (an expressed obligation commonly used in charterparties). He also referred to the recent ‘safe port’ case, The Ocean Victory, and discussed the positions of High Court and Court of Appeal on what constitutes a ‘safe port’.
