EU Maritime Law

Dr Henning Jessen is a Professor at the World Maritime University (WMU) and a fully qualified lawyer in his German home jurisdiction. He graduated from Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel (Germany) in 2001. Supported by a scholarship of the German-American Fulbright Commission, he has undertaken postgraduate studies in Admiralty and Maritime Law in the United States (Tulane Law School, New Orleans) from 2003-2004. In 2005, he received his PhD at Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg with highest honors (summa cum laude).

Dr. Henning Jessen started his legal career in 2006 in the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation & Development. Since 2008, he has been working as a professor in the areas of Maritime Law and the Law of the Sea, at two universities, namely in the German maritime hubs of Bremen (2008-2012) and Hamburg (2012-2016). Since 2016, he is an Associate Professor for Maritime Law & Policy at the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö, Sweden. His main areas of teaching and research are:

  • the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS);
  • Legal Aspects of IMO Conventions and Related EU Law;
  • Carriage of Goods by Sea Law / International Aspects of Transport Law;
  • Trade Facilitation and Related WTO Law.

Dr. Henning Jessen has co-edited the book EU Maritime Transport Law and has contributed several chapters to this extensive and unique legal commentary. He has given numerous external lectures and presentations, e.g., for the German Branch of the Comité Maritime International (CMI) and at various national and international conferences.

Dr Jessen was a Visiting Associate Professor at NUS Law from 13 January 2020 to 1 February 2020 where he taught the intensive module, EU Maritime Law.
