Richard Kilpatrick is an Academic Fellow at CML and a Visiting Professor of Law at the William H Bowen School of Law, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where he teaches courses in contracts, sales, and maritime law. Richard has published academic journal articles and book chapters exploring a broad range of maritime and international commercial law issues, and he regularly presents his work at conferences and invited lectures around the world. He previously held tenured and tenure-line faculty positions at business schools in South Carolina and Illinois, and he also practiced maritime law in Chicago. Richard spent time in residence at CML as a Visiting Research Fellow (July – December 2017), Academic Visitor (July – August 2018), and as a Visiting Senior Research Fellow (October – December 2023). Richard holds a JD from Tulane University Law School, and he is a member of the Illinois bar and the Maritime Law Association of the United States. His book Geopolitical Disruption in Shipping: Sanctions, War, and Force Majeure is forthcoming in 2026 with Hart Publishing.
As a Visiting Scholar, he will conduct research on the impact of geopolitical volatility on shipping.
