Description

Access to justice has come to the forefront with the revision of 510 statutes in Singapore. The Law Revision Commission and the Attorney-General’s Chambers have completed a universal revision of Singapore’s Acts of Parliament, the 2020 Revised Edition of Acts which came into force 31 December 2021. This important event is the first comprehensive revision of Singapore’s statutes since the universal revision of 1985 (wef 1987). One of the main goals in the recent revision was to improve access to law by simplifying some statutory terminology. The impact of the simplification on access to justice can therefore be examined, but the revision raises larger questions as well. How does the change in the language of statutory laws affect their interpretation? Do the revisions mean that substantive legal principles will be impacted? Join us in this seminar, in which a range of speakers, from the Attorney-General’s Chambers, academia, NGOs, the bar and pro bono practice, will consider these questions, and provide an understanding of the simplification process and how it affects the practice of law.

Speakers:

  •  Ms Jeanne Lee, Attorney-General’s Chambers
  • Associate Professor Helena Whalen-Bridge, National University of Singapore
  • Mr Leonard Lee, Community Justice Centre
  • Ms Rachel Tan, Rev Law LLC
  • Associate Professor Jaclyn Neo, National University of Singapore (Moderator)
