French Ambassador visits TRAIL

January 14, 2020 | Faculty
(L-R): Anthony Chaumuzeau, Counsellor for Culture, Education and Science, Professor David Tan (Vice Dean (Academic Affairs) & Deputy Director (TRAIL)), His Excellency Mr Marc Abensour (Ambassador of France to Singapore), Professor Simon Chesterman (Dean, NUS Law), Associate Professor Daniel Seng ’92 (Director, TRAIL), Ms Ariane Trichon, Deputy Head of mission, Ms Chamira Lessigny (Attaché for Science and Higher Education, Embassy of France)

NUS Law was honoured to host His Excellency Mr Marc Abensour, Ambassador of France to Singapore, and delegates from the French Embassy in Singapore on 14 January 2020. His Excellency was given a tour of the historic Bukit Timah Campus and NUS Law’s recently established Centre for Technology, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & the Law (TRAIL). We were heartened to see His Excellency’s keen interest in artificial intelligence and the law and hope to develop new collaborations in the near future between Singapore and France.

TRAIL was set up to inform the debate on legal, ethical, policy, philosophical and regulatory questions associated with the use and development of artificial intelligence, information technology, data analytics and robotics, and aims to contribute to scholarship and policymaking through original research and impactful publications. In addition, TRAIL has established links with like-minded research centres around the world to further inter-disciplinary research in guidelines, standards, and solutions to the legal, ethical, policy, philosophical and regulatory issues associated with the above. TRAIL works very closely with the NUS School of Computing and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. Outside NUS, to date, TRAIL has formalised research partnerships with Hong Kong University and the University of Melbourne, have ongoing projects with the University of New South Wales, Tsinghua University, University of Western Australia and Université Paris Descartes (now the University of Paris).

TRAIL was launched by Mr Edwin Tong ’94, Senior Minister of State for Law and Health, at the 8th Asian Privacy Scholars Network (APSN) Conference on 5 December 2019. See the launch video here.
