September 14, 2019 | Student
The GCIA Class of 2019 with Adjunct Professor Neale Gregson (Course Director, GCIA) and Associate Professor Umakanth Varottil PhD ’10 (Director, Graduate Coursework Studies & NUS Law Academy)

Congratulations to the GCIA Class of 2019 on the conferment of their Graduate Certificate in International Arbitration!

The Graduate Certificate in International Arbitration Programme is designed to equip both lawyers and non-lawyers with the necessary skills and training to be arbitrators. On successful completion of the programme, graduates will then be qualified for direct admission as Fellows of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators. In addition, such candidates will, upon satisfying the age and other requirements and on completing the prescribed Peer Interview, be considered for admission as Fellows of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in London.

Since its inception on 13 January 2004, the programme has produced a total of 353 graduates trained in International Arbitration.

At the GCIA Graduation Ceremony held on 14 September 2019, NUS Law graduated the 16th batch of GCIA students. The following are the 18 graduates who received their well-deserved Graduate Certificates:

Arvind Mohan Koh Kian Long Wong Kai Yun
Cheang Yoke Loong Edric Leong Chao Yi, Charles Wong Yuk Sing
Chua Yi Li Mayuyi Chua Yu Yee Xia Jing
De Venecia Michael Johnson Garcia Michael Cheah Chee Seng Yi Gu
Ernest Yogarajah Balasubramaniam Rajiv Rajender Vohra Yip Jianqing
Hoong Wei Liang, Terence Venkat Padmanabhan Zhang Yujie

The Singapore International Arbitration Centre gives a cash prize of S$200 for the best paper in the Arbitration Law and Practice module of the GCIA Course. This year’s recipient is Mr Ernest Yogarajah Balasubramaniam.

Ernest said, “The programme was very well balanced and focused. Academic rigor was thoughtfully worked into practical sessions giving candidates a good general understanding in the area of arbitration and the practical issues involved. The lecturers were not only knowledgeable but committed teachers of the law. I thoroughly enjoyed the course. Most of all, I had the privilege to learn from and work with international and local classmates from diverse professional backgrounds”.

Adjunct Professor Neale Gregson (Course Director, GCIA) said, “Much has been said about Singapore’s rapidly developing eminence as an international centre for dispute resolution, particularly international arbitration – and this despite stiff competition from other well established centres such as London, Paris, New York and Hong Kong, but it must always be remembered that the arbitrator is the essential ingredient of the arbitral process, and that process cannot rise above the quality of the arbitrator.”

We wish the GCIA Class of 2019 every success in their future!
