Description
The word “metaverse” frequently pops up in our daily conversations about an imagined future where our selected avatars may interact in virtual worlds – going on shopping sprees and dinner dates or playing a plethora of fantasy games. In this virtual space, people from across the world may socialise, work, play, learn, shop and innovate. Technologies like video-conferencing shade into experiences in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) such as Lost Ark, Final Fantasy XIV, Fortnite and Animal Crossing. Virtual assets that comprise NFTs and cryptocurrencies, and virtual experiences like augmented reality are all seamlessly integrated. However, how much do we really know about how the laws regulating the physical world, if at all, would apply to the metaverse?
The Centre for Technology, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and the Law (TRAIL) at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, will be hosting a conference with the theme “Understanding the Metaverse: Law, Policy & Practice” (The Metaverse Conference). It aims to facilitate discussion of the entire gamut of legal and policy issues associated with the metaverse. The Metaverse Conference builds on the conversations in TechLaw.Fest 2022, and will be relevant not only for practising lawyers, but also for in-house counsel, regulators, academics, law students and the business community. It will be conducted physically – on the grounds of the NUS Bukit Timah Campus – and virtually.
