Dr Yangzi Li recently showcased her latest research at the IP & Innovation Researchers of Asia (IPIRA) Conference, held at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan.

Professor David Tan, Co-director of the Centre for Technology, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & the Law (TRAIL) and Head (Intellectual Property) at the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business, both at NUS Law, discussed how parodies may be better protected in trademark infringement and dilution claims.

TRAIL had the privilege of hosting Minister of Justice Dr Kathrin Wahlmann and her delegation from the Ministry of Justice of Lower Saxony in Germany on 21 February 2025. They were particularly interested in TRAIL's research on the legal and technical ramifications arising from the use of AI in the legal industry, with a focus on the courts in particular.

On Thursday 27 February 2025 at the Conrad Centennial, the 12th Developments in IP Law Series came to a close with its final of four sessions focusing on trade marks with over 150 participants in attendance.

On 20 February 2025, Mr Benjamin Wong represented NUS Law at the Breach of Confidence/Privacy & Data Protection session of the 12th Developments in IP Law series, co-organised by the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business and IPOS International. This annual flagship event at Suntec City Convention Centre attracted about 100 participants for this session with legal practitioners from a wide field of law firms, corporate entities and government sectors. Amongst the attendees were representatives from A*STAR, Changi Airport Group, Health Sciences Authority, Housing & Development Board, Mastercard and Microsoft Asia.

Professor Anthony Niblett with the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, Toronto, Canada, delivered the seventh seminar in the Seminars on LAw and Tech ("SLATE") series. In his seminar, drawn from his paper "Problems with Probability" which was jointly published with Professor Casey from Chicago Law School, Anthony explored the issues relating to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems to help triage the backlog of cases and facilitate the resolution of civil disputes in courts as well as for arbitration proceedings. Anthony noted that AI can accomplish this by establishing the facts of cases and by way of predicting the outcomes of disputes.

TRAIL’s postdoctoral fellow Dr Yangzi Li recently delivered a presentation at a prestigious two-day intellectual property (IP) conference held at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU). The event featured an Oxford University Press (OUP) Book Conference titled “Criminal Intellectual Property Enforcement in Asia – Its Sources, Significance, and Side-Effects” and the 9th VIPP (Visionary IP Professors for the Betterment of IP Study and Regimes in Asia) Roundtable.

SLATE VI (Seminars on LAw and TEchnology series) on 19 September 2024 was presented by Professor Kelvin Low, the leading expert on cryptocurrency and virtual assets. Prof Low started by describing the paper that is the subject of the talk, "Data Objects: New Things or No-Thing More than Ignis Fatuus", stemmed from the misapprehension amongst lawyers regarding the way technology works with regards to information in digital form, which the paper terms "data objects".

On 22 August 2024, as a prelude to the Global Forum on Intellectual Property (GFIP) that will be held at Marina Bay Sands the following week, the Singapore Academy of Law and TRAIL partnered to organise a seminar that brought together practitioners, policymakers and academia to discuss some of the salient challenges facing copyright law brought about by the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI).

Professor David Tan’s paper in the Yale Journal of International Law in 2000 called for the outer-space environment to be protected from pollution through the adoption of a Framework Convention on the Protection of the Space Environment and the establishment of an International Space Agency. Nearly 25 years later, such proposals for better international regulatory oversight have yet to be realised.

Two research centres at the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law (NUS Law), join forces with McGill University’s Institute for Air and Space Law to co-organise a two-day conference on emerging legal and policy issues around air and space navigation from 1-2 August 2024.
