Copyright Fair Use and the Digital Carnivalesque

The first of TRAIL’s flagship series of Seminars on Law and Technology (SLATE), SLATE I is based on Prof David Tan’s paper, Copyright Fair Use and the Digital Carnivalesque: Towards a New Lexicon of Transformative Internet Memes. This session discusses new social norms of online behaviour in a social media environment, as a context for various creative practices, such as internet memes, that present a resistance to authority and established norms. Against this backdrop of memes presenting a host of challenges to exceptions and limitations in copyright law, SLATE I analyses how, and to what extent, memes should be protected by the fair use doctrine.
