Description

Alongside the growth and development of newly-implemented competition laws in several ASEAN member states, many mature competition law jurisdictions in the ASEAN region are undergoing reform and renewal in their competition laws. This seminar will discuss developments in the competition law arena in the ASEAN region and will focus on challenges of administering competition laws in the new economy. This seminar will also discuss the recent Grab/Uber merger and compare the investigations and public findings of the ASEAN competition law authorities in the case.

About The Speaker
Dr Corinne is the Deputy Head of the Drew & Napier’s Competition Law & Regulatory practice. Corinne’s competition law experience extends to all areas of competition law practice, including assisting clients in the filing of merger notifications to the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS), leniency applications and assisting clients with CCCS investigations. Corinne has also assisted multi-national and local companies in setting up competition law compliance and audit structures, dawn raid and whistle-blowing programmes and conducting audit checks for companies in a wide range of industries in Singapore and other jurisdictions in the ASEAN region. Corinne has also assisted in the drafting of sectoral competition codes and guidelines and has advised regulators and industry on sectoral competition codes in the telecommunications, media, energy, aviation, transport and financial services sectors. Corinne’s corporate experience includes contractual and regulatory advice for listed and unlisted companies in a broad spectrum of industries, including aviation, technology, manufacturing and financial services; and Corinne has assisted in the reviewing and drafting of joint venture agreements, shareholder agreements, distribution and sale and purchase agreements. Corinne has been recognised by the Asia Pacific Legal 500 as a Leading Individual for Antitrust and Competition (2019) and Who’s Who Legal as one of Singapore’s foremost competition practitioners under the age of 45.
Dr Burton Ong, LLB (NUS); LLM (Harv); BCL/DPhil (Oxon) is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore (NUS), where he teaches and researches in the fields of competition law, intellectual property and contract law. He is an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore, as well as an Attorney and Counsellor-at-Law in New York State. He has served as a consultant on competition policy matters in Singapore and the ASEAN region to various government agencies, regional organisations, law firms and private sector entities. He is the editor of “The Regionalisation of Competition Law and Policy Within the ASEAN Economic Community” (2018), published by Cambridge University Press. He heads the competition law research division at the EW Barker Centre for Law and Business at the National University of Singapore.
