What began as a conversation about AI in gaming expanded into a discussion about creativity, ethics and professional disruption. At the inaugural TECHTALK@TRAIL hosted by NUS Law on 16 April 2026, Razer Co-Founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan joined Professor Tan Cheng Han, President of the Law Society of Singapore and Chief Strategy Officer at NUS Law, for a discussion on how AI is reshaping industries and society. TECHTALK@TRAIL is a new biannual dialogue series by the Centre of Technology, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & the Law.

Reflecting a school spirit that remains undiminished by the passage of time, more than 20 alumni across generations supported our NUS Law moot teams at Vis Moot and Vis (East) Moot, with the eight mooters going on to receive awards in the Oralist and Memorandum categories. Congratulations to them for their strong showing at the 33rd Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot) held in Vienna, and the 23rd Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis (East) Moot) held in Hong Kong SAR.

After a 25-year wait, the "World Cup” of mooting returns to the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law. In a stunning display of legal prowess and grit, the NUS Law team emerged victorious at the prestigious 67th Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. Facing off against over 800 teams from more than 100 jurisdictions this year, Phoebe Chan, Tan Kai Han, Lee Dawn Gene, Natalie Koh and Caleb Tan secured the world championship in Washington DC after an intense final round against Ateneo de Manila University.

The latest edition of the Thai-ed with Love initiative by the NUS Pro Bono Group has NUS Law students working with their Malaysia peers for the second year running, in a growing partnership between law students in the neighbouring countries as they embark on pro bono work with Thailand’s Thammasat University. What sets this year’s theme apart is the focus on scams, as this has been identified as one of the most prevalent digital threats facing young people in Thailand.

On 17 March, Professor Brian Leiter delivered a lecture titled “The Law and Philosophy of Academic Freedom” at the performance hall located on the Kent Ridge campus of the National University of Singapore, Faculty of Law. A world-renowned legal philosopher, Professor Leiter—the Karl N. Llewellyn Professor of Jurisprudence and Director of the Center for Law, Philosophy & Human Values at the University of Chicago Law School—also took the time to give in-class lectures to our students on the topics of “Adjudication and Interpretation” and “Authority”.

The EW Barker Centre for Law & Business hosted a Distinguished Visitor Lecture by Professor Charles Mitchell KC (Hon) of University College London on 10 March 2026. Moderated by NUS Law Professor Steven Elliott KC, the lecture drew on Professor Mitchell's collaborative work with Dr Jessica Hudson (UNSW Sydney) and offered an analytical preview of their forthcoming article in the Law Quarterly Review.

On 7 March 2026, the NUS Law Open House welcomed some 2,500 visitors, marking its first back at the Kent Ridge campus in almost two decades. The event symbolised a homecoming, offering visitors a renewed vision of campus life. Through the line-up of activities including talks, masterclasses and mock moots, visitors were given a glimpse into the NUS Law experience.

Representing the voice of a generation, Kamal Ashraf Bin Kamil Jumat ’26 attended The Next Charter: Shaping Singapore’s Legal Future Together as the only student panellist alongside industry leaders exploring the impact of AI in law. Humble and honest, the final year NUS Law student spoke about the differences within and across generations, while expressing his firm belief that automation cannot replace the learning of manual skills.

NUS Law alumna Foo Chi Hsia ’94 will take on the high-ranking administrative roles of Second Permanent Secretary (Digital Development) at the Ministry of Digital Development and Information, Second Permanent Secretary (Smart Nation) at the Prime Minister’s Office, and Second Permanent Secretary (Development) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). She will assume these three concurrent Second Permanent Secretary positions, with effect from 1 April 2026.

Professor Julian Arato, whose scholarly expertise spans the areas of public international law, international trade, international investment law and arbitration, contracts and corporations, gave two lectures in March 2026 at the Performance Hall of the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law, in his capacity as the Sat Pal Khattar Professor. Chaired by Professor Tan Cheng Han, S.C. ’87, Chief Strategy Officer at NUS Law, the lectures dealt with “Trade Unilateralism, From American Exceptionalism to America First”, and “The Corporation in International Law”.

We congratulate our alumni, Judicial Commissioners (JCs) Mohamed Faizal Mohamed Abdul Kadir ’05 and Sushil Sukumaran Nair ’89, on being appointed High Court judges from 9 March 2026. The appointments are a fitting recognition of Justice Faizal’s work in the Legal Service and Justice Nair’s outstanding contributions to Singapore’s legal landscape, with both continuing a proud tradition of service in public office by NUS Law alumni.

On 26 February 2026, Professor Norman Ho delivered a lecture titled “Rethinking Confucius’s (and Confucian) Legal Thought” at the performance hall located on the Kent Ridge campus of NUS Law. He explored how the concept of Confucian legal thought warrants a deeper look beyond the surface reading of it as one of benevolence, as it arguably shares a lot more in common with the “Legalist” position of harsh punishments, even for minor offences. In his lecture, Professor Ho pointed out the importance of considering other sources such as Confucius' biography and the Kongzi Jiayu (literally translated as “Family Sayings of Confucius”), besides the Analects (the sayings of Confucius).
