Description

The Fourth Industrial revolution brought about by the advent of AI is set to radically disrupt the practice of the law. This talk starts with a definition of what constitutes AI and describes the technologies that underlie it, discusses the range of applications of AI in legal education, legal research and legal practice and engages in a discourse with the participants as to the strengths, challenges and and potential limitations (including ethical) on the use of AI in the law.

About The Speaker
Gregory presently serves as President of the Law Society of Singapore. In that capacity, he also serves on strategic and influential boards and committees impacting and developing the legal sector such as: (i) Singapore Academy of Law (as Vice President); (ii) SAL Ventures Ltd; and (iii) Future Law Innovation Programme Steering Committee. Gregory has considerable experience and expertise in various spheres of civil and commercial litigation, arbitration and dispute resolution. His present practice encompasses a specialisation in banking and corporate insolvency and a broader dispute resolution covering company and shareholder disputes, contract, tenancy and land law disputes, employment law, defamation, negligence, contentious probate and other tort claims. He is also a recognised expert in charities governance.
Daniel Seng teaches and researches on information technology law and infocommunications law. Between 2001 and 2003, he was concurrently the Director of Research, Technology Law Development Group at the Singapore Academy of Law. He graduated with firsts from NUS and Oxford, where he received the Rupert Cross Prize in 1994. He had just received his doctoral degree from Stanford Law School, where he used machine learning, natural language processing and big data techniques to conduct research on copyright takedown notices. While he was at Stanford, he was a non-residential fellow with the Center for Legal Infomatics (CodeX). Daniel was previously a partner and head of the technology practice at Messrs Rajah & Tann. He was amicus curiae to the Court of Appeal of Singapore in the case of Chwee Kin Keong & Ors v Digilandmall.com Pte Ltd, the leading Singapore case on unilateral mistake in the digital
environment. Daniel has presented papers at various local, regional and international conferences and written on evidence, information technology and intellectual property laws. He was a member of various Singapore governmental committees that undertook legislative reforms in information technology and intellectual property laws. He is also an active consultant to the World Intellectual Property Organization, where he has researched, delivered papers and published monographs on copyright exceptions for academic institutions, music copyright in the Asia Pacific and the liability of Internet intermediaries?
