University of Tokyo Winter School

The University of Tokyo, Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, invited NUS Law to nominate 3 of our PhD students to participate in their Winter School, which is a one-week seminar from 4 to 9 Feb 2025 in Japanese Law. The Winter School offered a distinctive opportunity to delve deeply into Japanese law in English. Each session of the Winter School programme focused on a set of contemporary legal issues in Japanese society (and the world) and aimed to have an exchange of views among participants.
Three of our students attended the winter school and had valuable academic and networking experiences. Ms Priya Garg found the experience eye-opening, as it allowed her to compare legal systems in Japan, Singapore, and India. She particularly appreciated learning about the workings of Japanese law firms and the Supreme Court.
Ms Zhao Yuxin found that the courses broadened her perspective on how different jurisdictions addressed similar legal issues. Their visit to the Supreme Court of Japan was a highlight, deepening her understanding of the Japanese judiciary.
Mr He Tianxiang said he benefitted from the courses, which were relevant to his dissertation. The program’s focus on contemporary legal issues, combined with the expertise of its faculty, greatly enriched his doctoral research and provided a strong foundation for future academic and professional endeavours.
Our 3 PhD students also enjoyed interacting with professors and students from different countries, an experience that fostered peer learning and opportunities for future research collaborations.
