Pro bono work lauded
At the inaugural NUS Law Pro Bono Awards Ceremony on 2 March, NUS Faculty of Law (NUS Law) presented two new grants to finance laudable pro bono projects by students. Seven students and alumni also received awards for their pro bono work. Ms Indranee Rajah, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Finance, graced the occasion as Guest-of-Honour.
Congratulation also go to our alumni who were recognised for their pro bono work at the Legal Aid Bureau's Appreciation Awards on 28 January 2016. We applaud all award recipients for generously devoting their valuable time and skills to help the less fortunate; may their work continue to inspire others!
Professorial Fellow Stanley Yeo Volunteers in Cyclone-hit Vanuatu
In the wake of Cyclone Pam at the South Pacific Island of Vanuatu, Professorial Fellow Stanley Yeo offered to teach a three-week intensive course on Comparative Criminal Law at the University of the South Pacific.
NUS Team Sweeps All Prizes at 2016 Jessup National Round
NUS Law has emerged champions of the Singapore National Round of the 2016 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. The NUS Jessup moot team comprising Hairul Hakkim ’16, Mehaerun Simaa ’16, Victor Leong ’16, Joshua Hiew ’17 and Victor Yao ’17 made a clean sweep of all prizes at the National Round. In addition to winning the overall Round, the team also won the prize for Best Memorials, and Joshua was named Best Oralist.
The Late Justice Antonin Scalia: Who decides what is right?
In January this year, NUS Law hosted the late Justice Antonin Scalia as the Lee Kuan Yew Distinguished Visitor. His passing less than a month later shocked the law fraternity. Dean Simon Chesterman said: “NUS Law was privileged to host Justice Antonin Scalia on a visit to Singapore less than a month ago. He was incisive and witty, firm in his convictions but generous in his willingness to explain them to those who would listen. His passing is a great loss.” Here’s a look at the lecture Justice Scalia delivered at NUS Law, titled: Judges as moral arbiters.
Dean Chesterman Takes on Barista Role
In the run up to this year's Law IV musical fundraiser, Dean Simon Chesterman accepted a challenge from the Law IV students: if they raised S$10,000 for their designated charity, the Autism Resource Centre, Professor Chesterman would work the "kopi" station (coffee station) at the Summit canteen for an hour.As it turns out, the students raised S$28,000, and so from 12 to 1pm on 2 March, Professor Chesterman was kept busy making local favourites like "kopi, kopi-o, teh-C peng kosong", and some elaborate orders.
Reunions: Class of 1979
On 28 November 2015, more than 50 classmates from NUS Law's Class of 1979 gathered at the Kent Ridge Guild House to celebrate a remarkable milestone: "40 Years After We First Met". It was quite literally a walk down memory lane for the class as they visited NLT-3 at the Kent Ridge Campus, one of the very first lecture theatres they used in 1975.
