Restarting Reunions!

September 27, 2022 | Alumni

With the lifting of restrictions on group size and other Covid regulations, our alumni have been raring to meet and celebrate at their milestone class reunions.

Reunion of Law Matriculation Class of 1972

It was a most joyful and memorable occasion when around 40 classmates of the Law Matriculation Class of 1972 gathered at the Suntec City Guild House (NUSS) on the evening of 16th July 2022 – some coming from Australia, Hong Kong, India, East and West Malaysia and the USA. The enthusiasm and excitement, sentimental camaraderie and enduring affection among classmates was clearly visible, with some shedding happy tears of joy.

Having known each other as young adults in law school until now in our late 60s and early 70s – how time has flown by so quickly, but the fond friendships, cheekiness and feelings of youth never faded away. Rather, they were enhanced over time!

What a privilege and honour to meet up and exchange stories about life and experiences, families, children, grandchildren, careers, retirement, successes and tragedies. Some folks with marvellous stories were even encouraged to write anecdotal stories and books about their lives in Singapore and abroad.

The organising committee, comprising Teo Eng Leong (Vice Chairperson), Eva Kwong (Honorary Secretary), Bernard Doray (Communications), Lee Theng Kiat (Treasurer), Alice Seah (Events Coordinator), Edmond Pereira (Master of Ceremony), Chow Peng (Music Coordinator) and chaired by Chandra Mohan Nair, worked over a few months to create the right ambience and to ensure a memorable and happy time for our classmates.

The party was well-received with songs from our era in the 1960s and 70s accompanied by live music to set the right mood. One highlight of the night was when our first-year lecturer in Introduction to Legal Method, Mr Robert Fabrikant, kindly joined us virtually by Zoom from Washington DC.

The dinner provided by NUSS was delicious and the champagne, wines, beer and liquor helped to raise everyone’s spirits! The evening culminated with the cake-cutting by Alice and Eng Leong to mark this milestone of our 50th year since matriculation.

Our appreciation goes to the Law Faculty for its generous support for our reunion, and to Mr Bernard Toh, Director, NUS Alumni Relations Office for the university souvenirs. Our classmates were also very generous, and special thanks to Sofie Abidally Kasubhai, Gladys Gomez Miranda, Alice Seah, and other committee members for their financial contributions and gifts.

In the course of the evening, classmates were encouraged to give back to the Law Faculty, mainly to assist less privileged law undergraduates.

We did not forget our classmates who have passed on and we had a minute’s silence in memory of our dear Yap Boon Chin, Kam Siew Yee, Peter Chelvan, Ganeshmoorthy, Lee Pooi Kong, Eric Nagano, Moghan Muthiah, Choong Phooi Ying, Vachila Marimuthu and Yogendran. May their souls rest in peace, always.

As we grow older and become senior citizens with the attendant health issues, and with mobility and mental and physical energy on the decline, it was hoped that we would meet a few more times before we reach our 80s. Thank you dear classmates who were so gracious in attending, and we hope to see those who could not make it at our next class get together, hopefully in 2026.

Class of 1980 40th Anniversary Reunion

The Class of 1980 celebrated their belated 40th Anniversary since graduation on 12 August 2022 with a bash attended by more than 30 classmates. With the easing of Covid measures, many agreed that it was an opportune time to get together, and one classmate gladly opened his home for the gathering. It was a warm and cosy affair with so much catching up to do that the event went on until the early hours of the morning.

Upcoming Reunions

Coming up in these next few months will be the reunions of the Classes of 1994 and 2002. If you are from these classes, invitations should be on their way to you, if not already!
