Reunions & Alumni Events (January – June 2024)

October 2, 2024 | Alumni

We look back at some exciting alumni events held in the first half of 2024 and celebrate the NUS Law community that has grown from strength to strength over the years. Thank you to our alumni, for coming back and giving back of your time, talents and in many other ways. Your presence and enthusiasm makes all the difference!

Class of 2014 – Celebrating 10 years since law school

The Class Committee letting their hair down at the photo booth after months of planning

The Class of 2014 got off to an early start in the year as they celebrated their 10th anniversary on Friday, 23 February 2024. Planning started four months ahead for the class, which happens to be the youngest batch so far to celebrate their first milestone anniversary.  Professor Andrew Simester, Dean of NUS Law, welcomed everyone back to the Bukit Timah Campus (BTC), and shared with them the latest updates from the law school.

Special thanks to the enthusiastic Class Committee (Elaine, Catherine, Olivia, Kelvin, and Hao Ran) for rallying classmates to attend – more than 70 did! – and even arranging for a photo booth, which was well-patronised by everyone as they made new memories together. In particular, we applaud the two Class Ambassadors, Elaine and Catherine, for bringing the class together and putting in so much effort to make the event a success!

LAMP AY23/24 – Mix & Mingle

Alumni Mentors and students deep in conversation at Mix & Mingle which was held at BTC

For the second official LAMP Event for AY23/24, Mix & Mingle was organised as a networking event on campus to encourage Mentors and Mentees to not just reconnect with each other, but also to mingle with other participants. The event took place on Thursday, 29th February 2024 (a Leap Day!), and featured delectable live stations and an interactive game to encourage students to make the first move to network with Mentors.

It was heartening to witness alumni and students deep in conversation in small groups which formed organically over the course of the evening, and enjoying the networking game which rewarded the most enthusiastic players with attractive prizes! Once again, a big “Thank You!” to all Alumni Mentors for spending unhurried time with our students and generously sharing your experiences and advice. Indeed, it is at events like these that the NUS Law community truly shines.

Time has flown by since our days at NUS Law and the East-China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL), and we have journeyed together, chasing our dreams. It is amazing to see our fellow alumni thriving in their careers across the globe and excelling in their fields.

The Master of Laws (International Business Law) Programme marks its 20th anniversary milestone this year, and, thanks to the initiative of the IBL Alumni Committee, our anniversary celebration was held at Changning Campus of ECUPL in Shanghai on 10 March 2024. This event could not have been successfully organized without the generous support of several law firms where our IBL alumni are currenting working.

More than 100 IBL alumni took part in this event in person and a few alumni joined up virtually. In addition, Associate Professor Stephen Phua from NUS Law, Adjunct Associate Professor CT Kuan from NUS, Professor Yang Yanping, Professor Yang Zhongxiao, Professor Shao Jun, Associate Professor Li Na, Associate Professor Peng Xu and Associate Professor Shi Xiangrui from ECUPL graced the event.

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation by the current batch of IBL students on Cross-Border Investment, which showcased the skills they have learnt from the programme.

We look forward to the next 20 years of the LLM (IBL) Programme!

Reboot! Class of 2020 and 2021

Dean of NUS Law, Prof Andrew Simester, with the Classes of 2020 and 2021 in person at Reboot!

“Reboot” is a word that denotes starting or doing something again, but in a new and different way. Hence, Reboot! was planned as a networking evening to enable the Class of 2020 and 2021 to do just that. These two cohorts graduated at the height of the pandemic and missed out on many of the usual rites of passage that mark the transition from students to alumni – including the graduation dinner and the traditional class photo to commemorate four years of law school. While there was no way to go back and re-do any of that, an evening to reunite, remember and reconnect was certainly much appreciated by the two classes.

The event was held at The Exchange, a social bar downtown, on the 4th of April 2024. The place was abuzz with excitement as almost 100 alumni from the Classes of 2020 and 2021 came together to make new memories. The evening featured a delicious spread, including a luxurious grazing table adorned with a variety of artisan cheese, cured meats and handcrafted dips, complemented by an assortment of drinks.

The lively atmosphere was punctuated by a heartfelt speech from Dean Andrew Simester who applauded the resilience shown by the classes and raised a toast to their rekindled connections. This was followed by the traditional group photo common to all our class reunions to capture the memorable occasion – hopefully the first of many more to come for these cohorts!

Class of 2011 – Belated 10th Year Reunion
Contributed by Danny Quah ’11

The Class of 2011 reunited after 13 years, yet the bonds remain strong

Law school is a distant memory, but the friendships still remain fresh.

77 of our classmates (some with kids in tow) plus six of our professors shared laughs, hugs and swapped life stories at the long-overdue reunion on 5 April 2024. The occasion was graced by the current Dean of NUS Law, Professor Andrew Simester, as well as our then-Dean Professor Tan Cheng Han.

Despite our best efforts at spreading the word, we only managed to get slightly more than 30% of our cohort of about 230 graduates to attend, and we certainly missed the absentees. But, thanks to the reunion, we have started a class WhatsApp group with close to 150 members at last count. That is about 60% of our class!

It was an amazing evening. We laughed at both silly and fun memories, drank 50L of beer, caught up with people we have not seen in more than a decade, shared the highs and lows of life, found out that our class is one of the biggest supporters of the Law Alumni Mentors Programme (LAMP)… the list goes on.

After 13 years:

  1. Nobody remembers whether you got a 2nd Lower or 2nd Upper.
  2. Nobody remembers whether you got an A or a D in Company Law.
  3. Nobody remembers the names of some of the Professors whose classes you were trying to ace.

Instead, people remember whether you were a good classmate, a good friend, and a good human being. Or if you were only self-interested in getting ahead because of the bell curve and did not share your notes, did not help others when you were better at a subject, and generally were an awful person to be around.

A note to our juniors: While you study hard to achieve your 1st Class or 2nd Upper, please do remember that many of your classmates will be with you throughout your professional career (and we all know that being a lawyer is a marathon – a long and sometimes painful journey). Your classmates will see you through the ups and downs of your professional life – because who better to discuss important decisions like changing firms, moving in-house, making equity partner, or being a good General Counsel, than others who are in the same boat as you? So cherish your friends and enjoy law school!

All smiles while catching up – with kids in tow
Classmates keeping the banter alive, just like in the good old days
Catching up with their former Dean, Prof Tan Cheng Han
Craft beer from Ren Min kept spirits up throughout the night
