A longtime volunteer for helping the underprivileged, Cai Chengying saw first-hand how accessibility to law has remained a prevalent issue––and oversaw the setup of the first Community Law Centre at Tian De Temple in 2023. The Head of Strategy and Impact Evaluation at Pro Bono SG takes us through her student days at Bukit Timah Campus, discusses the importance of a holistic approach in pro bono work, and explains why the mandatory pro bono hours for aspiring lawyers is crucial in helping them see the power of community.

Leaving behind a successful and comfortable career at a leading law firm, Sean Douglas Tseng ’13 has dedicated himself to tackling the climate crisis. From climate litigation to advancing ESG initiatives, research and education, Sean shares his challenges and his deep passion for making a difference. He believes that everyone has a part to play and the time to take action is now.

Our alumna, Rena Lee ’92 LLM ’98, helped broker the historic High Seas Treaty after more than 15 years of talks, making a profound difference on the world stage and cementing her status as one of Time magazine’s top 100 Most Influential People in 2024.

At the prestigious NUS Alumni Awards 2023, the National University of Singapore (NUS) honoured the achievements of 21 outstanding alumni, and three alumni teams comprising another 14 alumni. NUS Law alumni who received honours comprised Madam Halimah Yacob, former President of the Republic of Singapore; Justice Andrew Phang Boon Leong, Senior Judge of the Supreme Court of Singapore; and Samson Leo, the Chief Legal Officer of Fazz.

With the lifting of restrictions on group size and other Covid regulations, our alumni have been raring to meet and celebrate at their milestone class reunions.

The Sheridan Fellowship Programme aims to develop talented young lawyers into academics fit for tenure track positions within NUS Law. Now inviting applicants for its tenth intake, the Programme has produced many promising academics over the years, including Assistant Professor Tan Zhong Xing ’12 who received the Hart Publishing Prize in 2018, and Assistant Professor Benny Tan Zhi Peng ’12. Both Zhong Xing and Benny are frequent recipients of teaching excellence awards at NUS, at the Faculty and University level.

In an age where everything digital matters, Steve Tan ’98 had shown foresight in leading the charge into this new terrain. He co-founded Rajah & Tann Technologies (RTT) and Rajah & Tann Cybersecurity (RTC), and is the deputy head of the technology, media and telecommunications practice at the Singapore office of Rajah & Tann Asia (RTA). He is also an Adjunct Professor at NUS Law, teaching the course Privacy and Data Protection Law.

As a recipient of the inaugural NUS Sports Scholarship in 2010/2011 who read law at NUS, Ms Goh Chui Ling ’16 embodies hard work and determination. A bemedalled national track and field athlete who is on a record-breaking streak, as well as a doctoral researcher in sports law and governance, she tells us about her journey in sports and law, and what drives her to persevere and excel at both.

The impressive string of accolades and achievements behind Koh Swee Yen SC ’04 might suggest a life that is all work and no play. Yet Swee Yen believes in excelling in both her professional and personal life. She shares her journey from finding her passion for the law to becoming a leading disputes lawyer and touches on how to build a sustainable legal career.

His appointment as the first Singaporean President of the Financial Action Task Force marks another milestone in Mr T. Raja Kumar’s illustrious career. He shares the inspirations behind his decision to read law and to serve the public good. He also reflects on the challenges and triumphs in his unconventional career journey.
