Description
Abstract:
The current Australian Government on election in 2022 undertook to run a Referendum to entrench an Indigenous Voice to the Australian Parliament (‘the Voice’) in its current term. It has honoured this commitment with the necessary legislation receiving Royal Assent [RA] in July this year. The Constitution requires the referendum to be conducted in the six months after receiving RA although a date for the referendum has not yet been announced. This talk will explore the legal history of Indigenous – White relations leading up to the Referendum with a focus on the developments in the 21st Century.
