Arif’s research and teaching interests are in the fields of law and religion, Muslim legal traditions, comparative law, and legal and political theory. He has held visiting appointments at law schools in the US, Italy, and Hong Kong, as well as at the Centre for Transnational Legal Studies in London. He is the author of Islam, Law and the Modern State (2019) and has published widely, including in the American Journal of Comparative Law and the Oxford Journal of Law and Religion. Currently, he serves as joint Editor-in-Chief of the Asian Journal of Comparative Law.

Currently, he serves as joint Editor-in-Chief of the Asian Journal of Comparative Law.

Arif’s initial degrees were from McGill University (BA) and the University of Toronto (LLB), and he was called to the Bar of British Columbia. He then earned an LLM degree from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and completed his PhD at the Faculty of Laws, University College London (UCL).
