This presentation is a summary of findings made during field research on Myanmar’s legal education system as of 2014-2015, and draws upon ethnographic field notes made while under a Fulbright Scholar grant and during work with BABSEACLE.

This presentation outlines the challenges confronting reform of Myanmar’s legal education system and the issues facing foreign development assistance in aiding such reforms. The purpose is to help mitigate the problems of development assistance tied to the unique context of Myanmar’s law schools.

About The Speaker

Jonathan Liljeblad is currently a Lecturer at the School of Law, University of New England (Australia). He holds a PhD and a JD (International Relations and Law, respectively) from the University of Southern California. He received his BS from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

His research interests are in international human rights and environmental issues. This presentation draws upon research conducted while under a United States Fulbright Scholar grant for Myanmar. He was born in Myanmar, but was raised in Sweden and the United States.
