Description

Emerging technologies, from artificial intelligence to distributed ledgers, are transforming the financial services landscape, creating opportunities as well as challenges. These technologies could drive substantial efficiency gains in the financial sector, including in the areas of payments, financing, investments, asset management and insurance. However, they could also pose risks to the stability and integrity of the financial system, in particular where they operate outside of the purview of legal and regulatory frameworks. The overarching theme of this seminar will be FinTech and the impact of technology, from a legal perspective, on financial systems. The seminar will consider the key legal issues in the domains of financial sector public and private law related to FinTech.

About The Speaker

Yan Liu is Assistant General Counsel in the Legal Department of the International Monetary Fund. Ms. Liu has advised on all aspects of the IMF’s operations, including its surveillance over member countries’ economies and financial and technical assistance to its members. She currently leads the Fund’s work to help member countries strengthen their legal frameworks to regulate the financial sector and respond to the opportunities and challenges posed by technological change, and to contribute to the development of international standards for financial regulation.

Panellists

Christian Hofmann is Assistant Professor and EXCO member of CBFL at NUS Law. Christian holds law degrees from the University of Freiburg (Germany), Humboldt-University Berlin (Germany), New York University (USA) and National University of Singapore (Singapore). His research interests are in comparative company and financial law. Prior to joining NUS law, he was a senior legal counsel for the German Central Bank and a law professor at the Private University in the Principality of Liechtenstein.

Rajesh Sreenivasan heads the Technology, Media & Telecommunications Practice at Rajah & Tann and has been advising clients on legal, regulatory and policy matters relating to technology, cyber security, data protection, telecommunications, electronic commerce, cloud computing, digital forensics and digital media for over twenty years.
