About the Event
This annual short course will focus on admiralty judgments handed down or reported in 2022-2023, complementing the short course on shipping law cases (by Professor Stephen Girvin) on 4 May 2023. It will examine recent developments in admiralty law, practice, and jurisdiction, focusing on decisions from the courts of Singapore, Malaysia, England and Wales, Hong Kong, Australia, and India.
Issues that will be highlighted include amendments to statements of claim (The Jeil Crystal), forum non conveniens in the admiralty context (PusanNewport), service out and submission to jurisdiction (COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers Ltd v PT OKI Pulp & Paper Mills), interveners (HSBC v The SeaCoral), letters of undertaking (PT Cakra Manunggal Semesta v The Ratu Enra), salvage (Smit Salvage BV v Luster Maritime SA, Argentum Exploration Ltd v TheSilver), judicial sales (Bank of New Zealand (Security Trustee) v The MY Island Escape, Dan-Bunkering (Singapore) Pte Ltd v The Yangtze Fortune), and priorities (The Ambassador).
Some of the more significant cases will be considered in detail; others will be highlighted but not discussed in so much detail. Care will be taken to illustrate how these new cases develop, resolve, or raise further questions on the development of the law in this field.
About the Speaker
Paul is a Professor of Law at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT). He was formerly the Deputy Director of theCentre for Maritime Law (CML) and Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore since May 2015, where heprimarily taught Admiralty Law & Practice, Maritime Conflict of Laws, and Trade Finance Law. Paul had previously held faculty positions in South Africa and New Zealand. He has also held visiting teaching positions and research fellowships atthe TC Beirne School of Law, University of Queensland, the Nordisk Institutt for Sjoerett, University of Oslo, and at CityUniversity of Hong Kong (as KH Koo Foundation Visiting Research Fellow at the Hong Kong Centre for Maritime and Transport Law).
Paul is the Chief Editor of the CML CMI Database on Judicial Decisions on International Conventions. He is the New Zealand correspondent for Lloyd’s Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly, and sits on the editorial boards of the Journal for International Maritime Law and the Maritime Business Review.

3. Registration is transferable within the same organisation if the request is made at least one week in advance of the event.

i.
