Description

ABOUT THE SEMINAR

As countries and regions globally embrace the concept of the hydrogen economy, the challenges as well as the opportunities are becoming clearer. This seminar will provide an overview of hydrogen value chains and consider what legal and regulatory issues require to be resolved to allow hydrogen to play a key role in the emerging net zero economy. The focus will be especially on blue hydrogen (produced by the steam reformation of methane) and green hydrogen (produced by the electrolysis of water). Among the issues discussed will be the categorisation of hydrogen in the context of clean energy policies; the specific challenges associated with blue and green hydrogen projects; the implications for other technologies including carbon capture and sequestration, renewable electricity production, and the upgrading of grids (both gas pipelines and electricity cables); the role of shipping in the transportation of hydrogen as ammonia and the possible role of ammonia as fuel for shipping.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Professor Paterson trained as a solicitor in the Office of the Solicitor to the Secretary of State for Scotland before pursuing an academic career. After studying at the EUI, Florence, Italy, he was a Research Assistant at the Centre de Philosophie du Droit, Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium, where he worked principally on the Governance Project with the Forward Studies Unit of the European Commission. He was Senior Lecturer and then Reader at the University of Westminster before he joined the University of Aberdeen as a Reader in 2004. He was appointed Professor of Law in August 2011 and co-founder of the Centre for Energy Law and directs Aberdeen’s involvement in the North Sea Energy Law Programme.

His research has covered systems theory, the regulation of risk, governance in the EU, corporate governance and energy law. Professor Paterson has provided specialist training in oil and gas law and corporate governance for the corporate sector, expert advice in international arbitration, and consultancy to international organisations. He is series editor (together with Professor Julian Webb) of the Law, Science and Society series published by Routledge-Cavendish.
