About the Competition
The Maritime Law Association of Singapore (“MLAS”) was established in 1991. The MLAS is an association that aims to promote the study and advancement of maritime law and its administration in Singapore. It is a member of the Committee Maritime International (CMI), a non-governmental international organisation devoted to the unification of maritime law across different jurisdictions. The main objective of this maritime mooting competition is to encourage law students, as well as those who are about to embark on a career in law, to study maritime law and/or to embark on a career as a maritime lawyer.

The Prize
The Champion will win a 2-week internship with 7KBW London, a leading commercial set. The prize includes a return air ticket with 2-weeks accommodation in London, and a cash prize of S$2,500 kindly sponsored by HFW. The timing of the internship is to be agreed between the Champion and 7KBW.
The First Runner Up will receive a cash prize of S$1,500, kindly sponsored by Virtus Law LLP.
There will be 2 Second Runners Up, each of whom will receive a cash prize of S$500, both prizes sponsored by Helmsman LLC.

Judges
This year’s Finals will be presided by a distinguished panel of judges:

  • The Honourable Justice S Mohan (Chair) (Supreme Court of Singapore)
  • Mr David Bailey KC, 7KBW (Barristers, UK)
  • Ms Michelle Taylor, The Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (MLAANZ)
    (President, Australia and New Zealand)

All earlier rounds will be judged by maritime practitioners.

Eligibility
The Competition is open to:

  1. All full-time students enrolled in the LLB, LLM, JD or PhD programme at the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law excluding any person who has been admitted to practice law in Singapore or any other jurisdiction;
  2. All full-time students enrolled in the LLB or JD programme at the Singapore Management University School of Law excluding any person who has been admitted to practice law in Singapore or any other jurisdiction;
  3. Any person who is undergoing relevant legal training under the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules, excluding any person who has been admitted to practice law in any other jurisdiction; and
  4. Any Qualified Person, as defined by the Legal Profession Act (Cap. 161), who is
    i. attending the Preparatory Course leading to Part B of the Singapore Bar Examinations; or
    ii. serving his/her practice training period under a practice training contract, excluding any person who has been admitted to practice law in any other jurisdiction.
  5. Any Advocate & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore who has been admitted to the Singapore Bar no earlier than August 2022 (“Newly Qualified Lawyer”)

All participants are required to register for the Competition by completing the online Registration Form. An accompanying registration deposit fee of S$50.00 is required with the submission of the Registration Form, which fee shall be returned to all participants, in full, after the Competition. The registration deposit fee will be forfeited in the event of an applicant’s failure to participate at the competition.

If a participant is for any reason unable to intern with 7KBW, he or she is required to notify the MLAS and the cash prize may be forfeited at the sole discretion of the MLAS.

The closing date for registration is 19 December 2022.
