Myanmar’s universities are engaged in reform efforts directed at a comprehensive transformation of the country’s higher education system that extend to the operations of its law schools. Concurrent with such efforts are a range of activities to reform Myanmar’s legal system, including changes to the regulation of the legal profession. The seminar focuses on the subject of legal ethics education, particularly with respect to content, in Myanmar law schools and identifies its place within the larger reform agenda for Myanmar’s legal profession. The seminar seeks to open discussion about the purpose and prospects for legal ethics reform in Myanmar’s ongoing transition.

About The Speaker

Jonathan Liljeblad is a Senior Lecturer at the Law School of the Swinburne University of Technology near Melbourne, Australia. He holds a PhD and JD, both from the University of Southern California, an MS from the University of Washington, and a BS from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He is an Endeavour Research Fellow 2018 in Myanmar, and was a Fulbright Scholar 2014-2015 in Myanmar. His research centers around ruleof-law issues in developing countries, with much of his field work involving case studies in Myanmar. He was born in Taunggyi, Shan State, Myanmar (original name Nanda Zaw Win) but grew up in Sweden and the United States. He has been a visiting teacher at Yangon University every year since 2014
