Overview

With the signing of the Singapore Convention on Mediation, Mediation has become a practical and business friendly way to resolve commercial disputes.

Yet, many lawyers and business people enter into mediation without having a clear sense of what mediation is, how to prepare effectively for it, and how to engage in strategies at the mediation table.

The field of mediation advocacy is about how one effectively represents oneself, or others at mediation.

This workshop will focus on giving students a working knowledge of how mediation works, the conflict resolution model used, preparing for mediation, dealing with the people aspect of disputes and strategies at the table. The workshop will also help students understand the legal frameworks (both domestic and international) that apply to mediation.

The workshop will be taught through a mixture of presentations, facilitated discussions and role plays.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the workshop, participants will learn how to:

  1.  Understand Mediation and Mediation Advocacy
  2. Learn and Use a Framework for Preparing to Mediate
  3. Deal with Strong Emotions and Scepticism
  4. Craft an Effective Mediation Strategy
  5. Deploy Strategies at the Mediation Table
