Andrew Phang received his LLB from the National University of Singapore in 1982, and both his LLM and SJD from Harvard University in 1984 and 1988, respectively. In 1990, he was admitted as an advocate and solicitor in Singapore.

Andrew Phang received his LLB from the National University of Singapore in 1982, and both his LLM and SJD from Harvard University in 1984 and 1988, respectively.  In 1990, he was admitted as an advocate and solicitor in Singapore.

He taught at the National University of Singapore’s Law Faculty from 1982 to 2000 and was appointed Professor of Law in 1999.  In 2000, he was appointed Professor of Law at the Singapore Management University (SMU).  He was made the Chair of the Department of Law at the SMU’s Business School the following year.  His extensive publications include the local edition of Cheshire, Fifoot and Furmston’s Law of Contract.  He is also General Editor of, as well as a contributor to, The Law of Contract in Singapore (Academy Publishing, 2012; Second Edition, 2022).  In addition to authoring and co-authoring, as well as editing and co-editing, several other books and monographs, he has contributed many chapters as well as forewords to other books.  He has published in the leading Commonwealth journals, and has, in fact, published in over forty local as well as international journals (in the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore).

He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2004.  He was appointed Judicial Commissioner on 3 January 2005, appointed Judge on 8 December 2005, appointed Judge of Appeal (since re-designated Justice of the Court of Appeal) on 28 February 2006 and the Vice-President of the Court of Appeal on 28 September 2017. He retired on 15 December 2022 and was appointed a Senior Judge with effect from 2 January 2023.  He was also appointed Distinguished Professor of Law at the Yong Pung How School of Law at the Singapore Management University with effect from January 2023. In recognition of his contributions to legal scholarship both as a legal academic as well as a judge over a period of four decades, the President of the Republic of Singapore awarded him the Meritorious Service Medal (Pingat Jasa Gemilang) in August 2022.

He was Chairperson of the NUS Law Advisory Council from 2019 to 2022, and was appointed Distinguished Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Law at NUS with effect from August 2024.
