Research Areas
Lessons for Big-Tech from the Regulation of the Financial Services Industry

Jonathan’s research centres on the increasing regulatory scrutiny of Big Technology firms (“Big-Tech”) such as Facebook, Google, and Amazon. Regulations have a natural localising effect (driven upwards from country) whilst Technology has a natural globalising effect (driven by electronic reach); as such, the two will naturally clash. As Big-Tech deploys its software across footprints that are only limited by electronic reach, it is becoming clear that local regulatory bodies are paying attention. By understanding this dichotomy, firms can successfully navigate these waters.

His research reflects on regulatory themes that affect Big-Tech and proposes approaches for how Big-Tech can defend commercial success by proactively understanding the regulatory approaches in the financial services industry.
