Maziar Peihani is the inaugural post-doctoral fellow at the Centre for Banking & Finance Law. Prior to joining the CBFL, he completed a PhD in law at the University of British Columbia. His doctoral thesis studied the legitimacy and accountability of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS), a transnational regulatory forum which is central to the regulation of international banking. Maziar has published at peer-reviewed journals, such as the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal, and presented his research at academic conferences, such as the Canadian Law and Economics Association Annual Meeting. He is currently investigating the reform of crisis management and bank resolution regimes internationally and in Canada. Maziar is also a consultant with the Inter-Pares Trust, a multi-national, interdisciplinary research project exploring issues concerning digital records and data entrusted to the Internet.

The reform of crisis management and bank resolution regimes internationally and in Canada
Maziar is currently writing a paper which focuses on the resolution of Systemically Important Financial Institutions (SIFI), particularly banking intermediates. The paper investigates the most recent developments of resolution reforms as a means to end too-big-to-fail phenomenon. It assesses the progress has been made and the challenges that still remain on orderly and effective resolution of SIFI. He is also keen to investigate the linkage between the international reforms and the Canadian regime. What has Canada done to prepare for effective crisis management and SIFIs resolution? How is the relationship between the Canadian supervisors and their counterparts governed with respect to the resolution of cross-border groups? The recent reforms of the Canadian legislative and regulatory frameworks and the new federal government proposal for bank recapitalization are among the issues that he would particularly attend to. He aims to present the paper in the upcoming Annual Review of Insolvency Law Symposium which will be held in February in Canada.
