Thiru graduated from NUS in 1998 and learnt the tools of the trade from the late Mr. R. Palakrishnan, SC, who – until his passing – was one of Singapore’s leading criminal practitioners.
In the landmark case of “Kadar“, which stands as the locus classicus on the Prosecution’s common law duty of disclosure, the Court of Appeal acknowledged Thiru for “his impassioned advocacy and commendable conscientiousness“. Describing the “Kadar” case as extraordinary, the Court of Appeal acquitted Thiru’s client after a 5-year legal battle.
As lead counsel under the Legal Assistance Scheme for Capital Offences (LASCO), Thiru has successfully represented other accused persons facing capital charges for murder and drug trafficking. An active supporter of the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme (CLAS) and pro bono volunteer, Thiru was named the Pro Bono Ambassador of the Law Society of Singapore in 2015.
