
TAN Weiming
Weiming is an Assistant Professor at the NUS Faculty of Law. His research focuses on trusts, fiduciaries, and equitable remedies. He is especially interested in developing organising principles that rationalise equitable doctrines and illuminate their relationship with other branches of private law and criminal law. Weiming’s three articles in the Law Quarterly Review are representative of his research programme and methodology: “Bribes, Constructive Trusts, and the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002” (2024) 140 LQR 356; “Account of Profits in Dishonest Assistance, the ‘Equal Rigour’ Principle, and the Retreat from ‘Status’” (2026) 142 LQR 58; and “Civil Liability for Bribery, Reanalysed” (forthcoming, 2027). His work has appeared in other leading journals, including the Modern Law Review, Legal Studies, the Journal of Equity and the Journal of Business Law. The Singapore Court of Appeal and the Singapore High Court have also cited his scholarship. In addition, Weiming serves as a contributing editor to the 35th edition of Snell’s Equity.

At NUS Law, Weiming convenes his own Equity and Trusts course and teaches Property Law as part of a team-taught module. He was awarded the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award for AY 2023/24.
Weiming obtained his Bachelor of Laws from King’s College London, ranking 2nd amongst his cohort. Besides receiving the Harold Potter Memorial Prize and Lexis Nexis Book Prize for being the top student in his second year, he was also awarded the subject prizes for Equity and Trusts, and Tort Law. In addition, Weiming holds a Bachelor of Civil Law from the University of Oxford, where he received the South Square Chambers Prize for Corporate Insolvency Law.
Prior to joining the faculty, Weiming served as a Deputy Public Prosecutor and State Counsel in the Attorney-General’s Chambers. He also had a stint at the Insolvency and Public Trustee’s Office as an Assistant Official Assignee and Public Trustee. While in practice, Weiming was also an adjunct faculty member at the Singapore Management University, where he taught Business Law to undergraduates.
