Abstract:

Does any academic unequivocally relish facing up? Books are written; books are published. Invariably, we authors hope they are as good as we think they are, even as we know they cannot be as good as we hope. Nothing, however, forces us to confront those hopes quite so much as a symposium issue. Authors enter the corral, armed with only a right of reply. Inevitably, we are going to take a few hits. Let us hope the patient survives. And doesn’t require major surgery.
