Meta XR Programs & Research Fund – January 2023 Update
The Centre for Technology, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and the Law (“TRAIL”) put out a call for proposal on 20 September 2022 inviting interested scholars to bid for a grant to conduct research on privacy and data protection issues arising from the metaverse. The closing date was 1 December 2022.
The grant evaluation panel comprised Professor David Tan (Co-Director, TRAIL) from the Faculty of Law at NUS and Associate Professor Jungpil Hahn (Deputy Director, TRAIL) from the School of Computing at NUS.
The following grant proposals are successful:
1) Normann Witzleb (Chinese University of Hong Kong, HKSAR)
Title: “A Rights-Based Approach to Protecting Children’s Personal Information in the Metaverse”
2) Dan Svantesson, James Birt and Eugenia Georgiades (Bond University, Australia)
Title: “Privacy Risks in the Metaverse: The Use & Misuse of People’s Avatars and Images”
3) Tanel Kerikmäe, Maria Claudia Solarte Vasquez and Tea Kookmaa (Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia)
Title: “Empowering AI-based Public Services by Metaverse and Protection of Biometric Data”
4) Terence Sim and Daniel Seng (National University of Singapore, Singapore)
Title: “Privacy Risks to Sensitive Personal Data presented by AR/VR Headsets with Eye-Tracking Capabilities”
