Singapore International Commercial Court Conference (SICCC) 2021: Machine Learning and the Law II

January 10, 2021 | In the News

Following his well-received talk on Machine Learning and the Law delivered at SICCC 2020, A/P Daniel Seng was invited to SICCC 2021 to deliver a follow-up talk on the same subject, with particular emphasis on artificial intelligence and judicial decision-making. In turn, A/P Daniel Seng invited TRAIL Research Assistant Shaun Lim to contribute to the content of the talk, given his research into the limits of artificial intelligence in judicial decision-making. The talk surveyed existing efforts in applying artificial intelligence in judicial decision-making, but highlighted issues and problems with the use of artificial intelligence which led to inherent limitations on the use of artificial intelligence in judicial decision-making. Ultimately, the talk concluded that while narrow artificial intelligence could help in rendering faster and more consistent justice on a larger scale than human judges could, it was incumbent on judiciaries to do so only with a thorough understanding of the limits of artificial intelligence and manage expectations accordingly.
