Professor M Sornarajah appointed Emeritus Professor

NUS Law is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor M Sornarajah as Emeritus Professor of the Faculty.

Professor Sornarajah is one of the most recognised and celebrated members of the Faculty. He joined NUS Law as an Associate Professor in 1986, was promoted to Professor in 1995, and became the first CJ Koh Professor of Law in 2005.

Professor Sornarajah studied law at the University of Ceylon, Sri Lanka, the London School of Economics and King’s College London, UK, and the Yale Law School, USA. He has held appointments at the American University, USA; University of Cambridge, UK; Carleton University, Canada; University of Dundee, Scotland; Kyushu University, Japan; London School of Economics, UK; Max Planck Institute, Germany; Osgoode Hall Law School, Canada and the World Trade Institute of the Universities of Berne and Neuchatel, Switzerland. He has also previously served as the Tunku Abdul Rahman Professor of International Law at the University of Malaya, Malaysia, and as the Head of the Law School at the University of Tasmania, Australia.

Over his career, Professor Sornarajah has published a dozen books, more than thirty chapters, over seventy articles, and many conference papers. His book, The International Law on Foreign Investment, published by Cambridge University Press and now in its fourth edition, is one of the leading texts on foreign investment.

He previously served as Editor-in-Chief of both the Singapore Journal of Legal Studies and the Singapore Journal of International & Comparative Law (now succeeded by the Asian Journal of International Law). He is currently a member of the advisory boards of the International and Comparative Law Quarterly, the Indian Journal of International Law and several other international journals.

Professor Simon Chesterman (Dean, NUS Law) congratulated Professor Sornarajah, thanking him for his dedication to the Faculty, and his contributions in the field of law.

“Professor Sornarajah’s work is among the most cited of any law professor and within the Faculty he is among the most respected. His teaching, research, and service has left an indelible mark on NUS Law, and appreciably raised its standing in the field of international economic law,” said Dean Chesterman.

“We are delighted to have his contributions recognised with this appointment and that we will continue to have the benefit of his teaching and research into the future.”
